PROJECT CHILD SAFE

Is a nationwide program whose purpose is to promote safe firearm handling and storage practices among all firearm owners through the distribution of free gun locking devices. The free gun locks were provided through a grant from the US Department of Justice with additional funding provided by the firearm industry.

The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office had distributed these free gun locks during community watch meetings and during regular business hours.

S.A.V.A.N.

Although crime is unavoidable in our community, the citizens of Caswell County has a powerful tool in the fight for justice. SAVAN helps victims of crime to get custody status and court information about offenders. It is a free 24 hour per day telephone service that is available in both English and Spanish. In addition, SAVAN automatically notifies registered victims of important events, such as the release of an inmate or scheduled court events. This is anonymous and is very easy to use. If you would like to register with the SAVAN program you can call :  1-877-NC-SAVAN or 1-877-627-2826

Business Watch Program

In 2003, in house records showed that 41 out of approximately 185 businesses had been victimized, with eleven crimes including breaking and entering. There were a total of 53 incident reports filed, thus, repeat victimization occurred. A plan of action was developed to alleviate this problem. A “Business Watch Program” was implemented. Literature, decals, and other supporting materials were obtained to support this crime prevention program. The Sheriff’s Office hand delivered an information packet to each business in the county. A meeting was set to discuss the needs and/or concerns of the businesses and to participate in the Business Watch Program. The information packet included a letter from the Sheriff, a brochure detailing the program, a questionnaire, and a return addressed stamped envelope. During the meeting there were two major concerns (1) identify fraud/check cases and (2) robbery prevention. As a direct result from the input gathered, window decals and height strips were distributed to each business. The information gathered from the business was also used to up-date the emergency contact information for 911. This program was funded through Local Law Enforcement Block Grant Funds (LLEBG).

Community Watch Program

Notices were placed in the local newspaper about the up-coming Community Watch Program. The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office held meetings in each of the districts through out the county to alert citizens of our intention to establish a community watch program and to hear their concerns. An anonymous survey was distributed to the participants of each meeting to identify common problems affecting their quality of life and to identify the crimes that the communities would like to see the Sheriff’s Office focus on. The survey’s were collected and discussed prior to the end of the meeting. Participants were asked to fill out a form which included their name, telephone number and what district they were in. More meetings are planned for the future.

The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office was the recipient of the 2005 Neighborhood Watch Outstanding Sheriff’s Office Award presented at the National Sheriff’s Association Annual Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Sheriff Michael Welch and Cpl. Dallas Stephens accepted this award.

Crime Alert Notifications

The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office purchased the Phone Tree software with funds from the Local Law Enforcement Block Grants. The phone tree is a program which allows staff of the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office to record a crime alert, cancellations, meeting announcements, etc. and the computer will call individuals in the Community/Business Watch Programs to alert them of events. The database was built using the information gathered during the business/community watch meetings.

Benefit Yard Sale

Each year the staff of the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office, 911 and Detention Center has held a benefit yard sale. All items are donated by staff and citizens. All the proceeds are then donated to a needy family or non-profit organization such as the Angel Tree.

Tip a Cop

Several employees participated in the Tip a Cop fund raiser at Fratellis. Employees waited on customers and all tips received were donated to Special Olympics.

Special Olympics

In January employees of the Sheriff’s Office helped to raise money for the 2005 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics of North Carolina. We sold T-shirts, hats and car magnets.
